Standard Operating Procedure for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements in Nanoparticle Production
1) Purpose
This SOP outlines the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for handling nanoparticles during production and research activities to protect personnel from potential exposure to hazardous materials.
2) Scope
This SOP applies to all personnel working with nanoparticles in production, quality control, research, and development environments.
3) Responsibilities
- Operators: Must wear and properly use the required PPE when working with nanoparticles.
- Safety Officer: Ensures that PPE guidelines are followed and that the equipment is regularly maintained and available.
4) Procedure
4.1 PPE Requirements
4.1.1 General PPE
- 4.1.1.1 Wear a lab coat or coveralls when handling nanoparticles to prevent contamination of clothing and skin.
- 4.1.1.2 Wear nitrile or latex gloves to protect hands from direct contact with nanoparticles.
- 4.1.1.3 Use safety goggles or a face shield to protect eyes from exposure to nanoparticles during weighing, mixing, or processing activities.
4.1.2 Respiratory Protection
- 4.1.2.1 If working with dry powders or generating aerosols, use a respirator (N95 or higher) or work in a fume hood to prevent inhalation of nanoparticles.
4.2 PPE Maintenance and Inspection
4.2.1 Inspection
- 4.2.1.1 Inspect PPE for any visible damage, such as tears in gloves or cracks in safety glasses, before each use.
- 4.2.1.2 Replace any defective PPE immediately to ensure full protection.
4.2.2 Cleaning and Storage
- 4.2.2.1 Clean reusable PPE, such as lab coats and goggles, regularly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- 4.2.2.2 Store PPE in a designated, clean area when not in use to prevent contamination.
