Standard Operating Procedure for Disinfection and Sanitization

Purpose

The purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to outline the steps for effectively disinfecting and sanitizing laboratory surfaces and equipment to maintain a clean and sterile working environment.

Scope

This SOP applies to all personnel involved in laboratory operations and is applicable to all laboratory surfaces and equipment requiring disinfection and sanitization.

Responsibilities

  • Laboratory Technicians: Responsible for implementing the disinfection and sanitization procedures outlined in this SOP.
  • Lab Manager/Supervisor: Responsible for overseeing compliance with the SOP and ensuring that adequate resources are available for disinfection and sanitization activities.
  • Facility Maintenance Staff: Responsible for providing necessary disinfectants and sanitizers and ensuring that equipment is properly maintained for effective cleaning.

Procedure

  1. Selection of Disinfectants:
    • Identify appropriate disinfectants and sanitizers approved for laboratory use based on compatibility with surfaces and effectiveness against target microorganisms.
  2. Preparation of Disinfectant Solutions:
    • Prepare disinfectant solutions according to manufacturer instructions and recommended dilution ratios.
    • Label all prepared solutions with the date of preparation and expiry.
  3. Surface Preparation:
    • Remove visible debris and contamination from surfaces using appropriate cleaning agents and wipes.
  4. Disinfection Procedure:
    • Apply the prepared disinfectant solution to surfaces using appropriate applicators, ensuring complete coverage.
    • Allow the disinfectant to remain in contact with the surface for the recommended contact time.
  5. Sanitization Procedure:
    • Rinse surfaces with sterile water or alcohol
to remove residual disinfectant.
  • Allow surfaces to air dry or use lint-free wipes to dry surfaces thoroughly.
  • Equipment Disinfection:
    • Disinfect laboratory equipment and tools regularly, following manufacturer guidelines and recommendations.
