1) Purpose
The purpose of this SOP is to establish guidelines for the maintenance and operation of chillers in pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities to ensure efficient cooling processes.
2) Scope
This SOP applies to all chillers used for cooling purposes within the facility premises.
3) Responsibilities
The Facilities Management Department is responsible for implementing and adhering to this SOP. The Chiller Technician is responsible for the maintenance and operation of chillers.
4) Procedure
- Preventive Maintenance Schedule
- Develop a preventive maintenance schedule for chillers based on manufacturer recommendations and operational requirements.
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance tasks such as checking refrigerant levels, lubricating moving parts, and cleaning condenser coils.
- Chiller Operation Procedures
- Follow standard operating procedures for starting up, operating, and shutting down chillers.
- Monitor chiller performance parameters including temperature, pressure, and refrigerant flow during operation.
- Emergency Procedures
- Establish emergency procedures for chiller malfunctions, leaks, or other critical incidents.
- Train personnel on emergency response protocols and evacuation procedures if necessary.
- Water Treatment and Testing
- Implement water treatment programs to maintain chiller water quality and prevent corrosion or scaling.
- Regularly test chiller water for pH levels, conductivity, and microbial contamination.
- Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of chiller inspections, maintenance activities, water treatment, and testing results.
