Nanoparticle Formulation : SOP for Preparation of Carbon-Based Nanomaterials

SOP for Preparation of Carbon-Based Nanomaterials

Standard Operating Procedure for Preparation of Carbon-Based Nanomaterials

1) Purpose

This SOP outlines the procedure for the preparation of carbon-based nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, and fullerenes, which are used in various biomedical and industrial applications.

2) Scope

This SOP applies to laboratory personnel involved in the synthesis and characterization of carbon-based nanomaterials for different research and industrial purposes.

3) Responsibilities

  • Operators: Responsible for preparing carbon-based nanomaterials following this SOP.
  • QA: Ensures that the prepared nanomaterials meet the required specifications for purity and particle size.

4) Procedure

4.1 Synthesis of Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs)

4.1.1 Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)

  • 4.1.1.1 Load the substrate with a metal catalyst (e.g., nickel, cobalt).
  • 4.1.1.2 Introduce a carbon-containing gas (e.g., methane) into the CVD reactor at high temperatures (600–1200°C) to grow CNTs on the substrate.

4.2 Preparation of Graphene

4.2.1 Exfoliation Method

  • 4.2.1.1 Prepare graphene by exfoliating graphite in a suitable solvent (e.g., N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) under sonication.

4.3 Purification and Characterization

4.3.1 Purification

  • 4.3.1.1 Purify the nanomaterials by washing them with solvents to remove impurities.

4.3.2 Particle Size Measurement

  • 4.3.2.1 Measure the particle size and surface area of the carbon-based nanomaterials using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) or transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

4.4 Storage

4.4.1 Storage Conditions

  • 4.4.1.1 Store the carbon-based nanomaterials in sealed containers at room temperature.
