SOP for Safe Disposal of Hazardous Chemicals

SOP for Safe Disposal of Hazardous Chemicals

Standard Operating Procedure for Safe Disposal of Hazardous Chemicals

1) Purpose

The purpose of this SOP is to provide systematic procedures for the safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible disposal of hazardous chemicals to minimize risks to personnel, property, and the environment.

2) Scope

This SOP applies to all hazardous chemicals, including flammables, corrosives, reactives, and toxic substances, handled and disposed of within laboratories, production facilities, and storage areas.

3) Responsibilities

  • Operators: Identify hazardous chemicals requiring disposal and segregate them correctly.
  • Supervisors: Oversee chemical disposal processes and ensure compliance with this SOP.
  • Safety Officers: Monitor waste disposal practices, conduct training, and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Waste Management Team: Handle collection, transportation, and final disposal of hazardous waste.

4) Procedure

4.1 Identification and Classification of Hazardous Waste

  1. Types of Hazardous Waste:
    • Flammable Waste: Solvents, alcohols, and other combustibles.
    • Corrosive Waste: Acids (e.g., hydrochloric acid) and bases (e.g., sodium hydroxide).
    • Reactive Waste: Chemicals that react violently with air, water, or other substances (e.g., peroxides).
    • Toxic Waste: Heavy metals, pesticides, or chemicals harmful to human health.
  2. Labeling and Segregation:
    1. Label all waste containers clearly with:
      • “Hazardous Waste”
      • Material name and chemical classification
      • Hazard symbols (flammable, corrosive, toxic, etc.)
      • Date of waste generation
    2. Segregate waste based on compatibility to prevent dangerous reactions:
      • Keep acids separate from bases.
      • Store flammable waste away from
oxidizers.
  • Segregate reactive materials from water or air-sensitive substances.
  • 4.2 Collection and Storage of Hazardous Chemical Waste

    1. Waste Collection:
      1. Use containers compatible with the chemical waste being stored (e.g., plastic for acids, metal for solvents).
      2. Ensure containers are tightly sealed to prevent spills and vapor release.
      3. Place waste collection containers in designated hazardous waste areas.
    2. less
      Copy code

    3. Storage Requirements:
      1. Store hazardous waste in labeled, designated areas with:
        • Proper ventilation
        • Secondary containment (e.g., spill trays)
        • Access restricted to authorized personnel
      2. Ensure waste areas have spill kits, fire extinguishers, and emergency eyewash stations nearby.
    4. Weekly Inspection:
      1. Inspect storage areas for:
        • Leaks, spills, or container damage
        • Proper labeling and segregation
        • Compliance with storage capacity limits
      2. Record findings in the Waste Storage Inspection Log (Annexure 1).

    4.3 Disposal of Hazardous Waste

    1. Approved Disposal Methods:
      1. Flammable Waste: Send to licensed incineration facilities for safe combustion.
      2. Corrosive Waste: Neutralize acids and bases under controlled conditions before disposal.
      3. Reactive Waste: Deactivate reactive chemicals through approved chemical treatments.
      4. Toxic Waste: Send to authorized hazardous waste treatment plants for safe containment or chemical treatment.
    2. less
      Copy code

    3. Contracting Licensed Waste Disposal Agencies:
      1. Only use licensed vendors for transporting and disposing of hazardous waste.
      2. Maintain vendor certifications and disposal manifests for audits.
    4. Documentation:
      1. Complete a Hazardous Waste Disposal Log (Annexure 2) for each batch of waste disposed of, including:
        • Material name and classification
        • Quantity of waste
        • Disposal date and method
        • Vendor name and manifest number
      2. Retain disposal records for a minimum of three years.

    4.4 Spill and Emergency Management

    1. Minor Spills:
      1. Alert nearby personnel and wear appropriate PPE.
      2. Contain the spill using absorbent material (e.g., spill kits).
      3. Clean the area using neutralizers or decontaminants as specified in the SDS.
    2. less
      Copy code

    3. Major Spills:
      1. Evacuate personnel and notify the Safety Officer immediately.
      2. Activate emergency alarms and ventilation systems.
      3. Call the designated spill response team for cleanup.
    4. Incident Reporting:
      1. Document spill incidents in the Incident Report Log (Annexure 3).
      2. Include details such as material involved, location, actions taken, and corrective measures.

    4.5 Training and Audits

    1. Conduct mandatory training sessions for all personnel handling hazardous waste. Topics include:
      • Proper waste segregation and labeling
      • Safe handling and disposal practices
      • Emergency response procedures
    2. Perform annual audits of hazardous waste management practices to ensure regulatory compliance.
