Standard Operating Procedure for Safe Storage of Flammable Materials
1) Purpose
The purpose of this SOP is to establish systematic procedures for the safe storage of flammable materials to prevent fire, explosion, or other hazards, ensuring the safety of personnel, property, and the environment.
2) Scope
This SOP applies to all personnel handling, storing, or managing flammable liquids, gases, and solids within the facility. It includes guidelines for storage conditions, segregation, inspection, and emergency preparedness.
3) Responsibilities
- Operators: Ensure flammable materials are stored in designated areas following safety protocols.
- Supervisors: Verify compliance with storage requirements and conduct regular inspections.
- Safety Officers: Provide training, conduct risk assessments, and oversee emergency preparedness.
- Maintenance Team: Maintain storage facilities, ventilation systems, and fire safety equipment.
4) Procedure
4.1 Identification of Flammable Materials
- Classification of Flammable Materials:
- Identify flammable materials using the Safety Data Sheet (SDS):
- Flammable Liquids: Flash point below 100°F (e.g., gasoline, acetone, ethanol).
- Flammable Gases: Ignitable at room temperature (e.g., propane, hydrogen).
- Flammable Solids: Capable of combustion (e.g., sulfur, powdered metals).
- Label all containers clearly with hazard symbols, flash points, and precautionary statements.
- Identify flammable materials using the Safety Data Sheet (SDS):
4.2 Storage Requirements for Flammable Materials
- General Storage Guidelines:
- Store flammable materials in designated fire-resistant storage areas or cabinets.
- Ensure containers are tightly sealed to prevent vapor release.
- Maintain clear labeling
for all containers, including hazard class, material name, and emergency handling instructions.

- Store flammable liquids in approved flammable storage cabinets made of fire-resistant materials.
- Limit the quantity of flammable liquids stored in work areas to 10 gallons or as per local regulations.
- Use proper secondary containment trays to capture leaks or spills.
- Ensure adequate ventilation to prevent vapor accumulation.
- Store gas cylinders in upright positions and secure them with chains or brackets to prevent tipping.
- Keep flammable gas cylinders away from ignition sources and oxidizing agents.
- Ensure cylinders have proper valve protection caps in place when not in use.
- Store flammable solids in non-combustible containers with tightly sealed lids.
- Isolate flammable solids from moisture, heat, and incompatible materials (e.g., oxidizers).
- Label containers with specific instructions for handling and storage.
- Maintain ambient temperatures below the material’s flash point.
- Ensure storage rooms or cabinets have proper ventilation systems to remove vapors.
- Use explosion-proof electrical fixtures in flammable material storage areas.
- Keep flammable storage areas free of open flames, sparks, or heat-generating equipment.
- Store flammable materials away from:
- Oxidizers (e.g., peroxides, chlorine)
- Reactive chemicals (e.g., acids, bases)
- Ignition sources (e.g., heaters, electrical equipment)
- Segregate flammable gases and liquids from one another to minimize risks.
4.3 Inspection and Maintenance
- Weekly Inspections:
- Inspect flammable material storage areas for:
- Damaged containers or leaks
- Improper labeling or storage
- Blocked ventilation systems
- Record inspection findings in the Flammable Storage Inspection Log (Annexure 1).
- Inspect flammable material storage areas for:
- Fire Safety Equipment Maintenance:
- Ensure fire extinguishers (Class B) are placed near storage areas and are operational.
- Maintain sprinklers and explosion suppression systems regularly.

4.4 Emergency Preparedness
- Spill Management:
- Use spill kits containing absorbents, neutralizers, and PPE to address minor leaks or spills.
- Evacuate the area in case of large spills and contact emergency responders.
- Fire Emergency:
- Activate the fire alarm and evacuate personnel to a safe distance.
- Use Class B fire extinguishers to extinguish small fires if trained to do so.
- Contact the fire department immediately for large fires.
- Evacuation Plan:
- Display emergency evacuation routes and fire escape plans near storage areas.
- Conduct fire drills quarterly to ensure preparedness.
